Knowing your Dominant Eye in archery and other types of sports that require aiming is very important. In archery it’s the most important fact, it even solely determines if you use a right handed bow or a left handed bow, your hand preferences has nothing to do with it. Therefor don’t go running to buy a bow before reading the rest of this article and determining your dominant eye.

If your right eye turns out to be your dominant eye you should buy a right handed bow (bow is held with the left hand and string is pulled with the right hand), and if your left eye is the dominant one you should buy a left handed bow ( bow is held with right hand and string is pulled with the left hand)

To determine your Dominant eye there is many methods, i’ll mention 3 easy ones.

Method 1:

  • Put both of your hands together making a small whole between them.
  • while opening both your eyes focus on a far point from the whole.
  • close one of your eyes randomly.
  • you will notice that you can only see the point with one of your eyes and that’s the dominant one.
  • repeat the practice on different targets just to make sure you have a correct result.

Method 2: (you need help from someone)

  • Put both of your hands together making a small whole between them.
  • while opening both your eyes, look from the whole at the nose of your friend.
  • from that whole your friend will only see one of your eyes, ask him to point to it
  • and that will be your dominant eye.
  • repeat this exercises more than once just for validation.

Method 3:

  • put both of your hands together making a small whole in between.
  • while opening both your eyes focus on a far point from the whole.
  • keep bringing your hands closer to your eye while seeing the point at all time from the whole.
  • when you hand reach your face it will be shifted to your dominant eye.

Please let us know if you think of another method we should mention

happy hunting 🙂
