  1. Learn to Cook

The first and most important way to eat healthy is to prepare home cooked meals. You need to say goodbye to your daily trips to the neighborhood restaurant for dinner and also to canned food. Once you replace packed meals and daily dining at restaurants, you will start saving on your food expenses. Plus, it also gives you the satisfaction of knowing what’s in your diet.

    2. Plan Your Meals

Meal planning is another important step towards healthy eating in a budget. You need to plan entire week’s meals and if possible prep them in advance so that you eat only what’s in your fridge. You can also repurpose them to avoid wastage. First you need to create a list of your favorite dishes, which are healthy and then prepare a grocery list for your weekly requirements according to your meals plan. Shop once a week and enjoy healthy eating.

    3. Use online coupons and discounts

If you do a little research on Google, you will be able to find numerous coupon codes and deals offering discounts on grocery. You can take advantage of these discounts to save on your grocery shopping. If possible, you can also sign up for a membership or club card at your local grocery store as it is now possible to load coupons digitally on your supermarket club card.

  4. Go for seasonal fruits and veggies

Seasonal fruits and veggies are not only fresh, but also cheaper than their out-of-season counterpart. They are more nutritious and help you save money; it’s a total win-win. You can stock them up when they are on sale and freeze them to use later in the week. For winters you can go for frozen vegetables as they are cheaper. Don’t forget to check online as you can get best deals online.

  5. Experiment with different cuisines

Don’t restrict yourself when it comes to food. You can try different cuisines to get the best value to flavor ratio. Mexican and Indian cuisines include a lot of inexpensive ingredients and hence allow you to eat healthy without affecting your budget. Both these cuisines include a lot of rice and less meat; also the ingredients can be used interchangeably. This will allow you to include more plant-based proteins in your weekly meal plan, which is comparatively cheaper.

Start with these small steps and you will eventually find out that healthy eating is not that expensive after all.

Scrumptious and Allergy-free

Food Allergies

More and more people suffering from and developing allergies. For some it’s a reaction to the onset of the 21st century, while for other unfortunates, it’s a case of being born with problems of varying degrees of severity.

Food Allergies

One of the more common allergic afflictions is the inability to digest milk and milk products. It causes many respiratory problems with excessive mucus, colds, coughs, tonsillitis, asthma and many other debilitating symptoms.

Whole milk contains a great deal of saturated fat, which is coarse in texture and therefore difficult to digest. While dietitians and doctors advise that the population in general seek out low-fat products, there are still those who cannot tolerate cow’s milk in any form.

For this sector of the population, cooking and food preparation becomes twice as difficult. Alternatives such as almond, soy and sesame seed milk have great nutritional value, and goat’s milk has been recommended as the closest in chemical composition to that of human milk.

It is often difficult to devise menus which don’t contain dairy products, but we has included several recipes which meet specific needs such as these.

High in taste, low in calorie

Cakes are delicious and they have a lot of calories as well. That is why; many people avoid cakes so that they can avoid weight gains. But that makes one sad as being deprived from having cakes is not a very good idea. But how about cakes, which have low calories? Yes, in the case of cake delivery, one can always order low calorie cakes, which are not less yummy than the others.

One can even bake cakes which are low in calories. For that, one needs to keep in mind some basic things. The first thing that should be included in the baking process is apple sauce. This is a lovely substitute for sugar, and thus, it removes fat from the cake. Apple sauce is a good replacement when done in a one is to one ratio. But when the cake dough is prepared, one should remember to use a less amount of milk, water and other kind of liquids, which one wants to include in the recipe. One can also use less amount of oil or butter in the cake dough if they use apple sauce in it. One should replace white flour with something healthy to make the dough. Whole grain wheat flour will do a perfect replacement as it has a lot of fibre and is easily digestible.

If one wants to have low calorie cakes, then they certainly have to low down the toppings. Candy toppings and frosted sugars are a strict no when one is baking a low calorie cake. One can though use whipped coconut cream or curds instead of that. One can also use fresh fruit slices as toppings and rich dark chocolates, which are full of antioxidants.

Some low calorie cake recipes which one can bake at home

Carrot Cake: This cake needs grated carrots and does not need white flour, sugar and excess butter. One can add healthy dry fruits like almond and dates along with coconuts, walnuts, raisins and bananas. This is a perfect sugar free textured cake where one can use cream cheese frosting as toppings, and they are perfectly yummy in taste.

German Chocolate Cake: This is a natural chocolate cake where dark chocolate liquor is used along with soy milk and coconut milk mixed with whole wheat flour.

Banana Snack Cake: This is a perfect healthy combination with corn flour and whole wheat, which turns into a loaf cake. One can add ripe bananas and almond butter to make it soft and tasty.

Flour less Chocolate Cake: As the name goes by, this cake is made without flour. But that does not mean that it is not tasty. It has a lot of baking chocolates, butter, eggs, cocoa powder, honey and coconut oil in it so that the cake turns out to be a very soft one.

For birthday cake delivery, one can easily bake a low calorie cake or order the same if they wish not to put on so much calories and increase their body weight.

Build a Bar

Notice the catchy pun? Building a bar requires a bit more work than going to the mall, but I am certain you will enjoy it a lot more. A few things to consider are location, accommodation and budget.

Location. Measure out your area to figure out the best spot for your new bar. Determining available areas to place your bar will help you decide on what accommodations you will be able to provide your future guests.

Accommodations. Decide if your bar consists of a place to mix drinks, or if it will also provide seating. If you plan on seating, make sure your bar stools allow enough knee room between the stool and the bar.

Budget. You don’t have to have a fortune to build a bar! Consider the costs of cabinets, counter space, painting and flooring. If you decide to have a sink then you will need to consider the cost of plumbing as well. Using the picture as an example you can use RTA (ready to assemble) cabinets that set on the floor for a minimal cost. The cost of your counter is dependent on what type of slab you purchase. Typically you can find already cut slabs that will fit nicely on top of your cabinets for an affordable price. Laying tile is something you can accomplish yourself with a little practice if you are looking to save some money. Often, choosing the right color of paint presents one of the biggest challenges. Consider using your favorite cocktail as inspiration for your paint choice.

To recoup the costs of a new kitchen remodel try enjoying this delicious drink while enjoying your new bar:

White Russian on a Budget:

Here is what I have found to be the best White Russian without the name brand liquors:

  • Fill cup with ice cubes
  • 1 part Kapali liqueur
  • 1 part Platinum Vodka
  • 1 part Milk

Now you are ready to enjoy your White Russian (with that bear you built at the mall).

Most Common Foods For An Unhealthy Life

I have a ridiculous addiction to frozen pot pies. The amount of calories, sodium and saturated fat compared to the serving size makes them one of the worst items in the grocery store. But they are so cheap, quick, and tasty that they’re hard to resist. Such foods drive American consumers into dire health consequences. Some of the most common elements of our diets have almost no nutritional value, mostly only harmful chemicals.

Sweet Drinks

The biggest contributor to an unhealthy nation may be drinks with artificial sweeteners and high caloric content that don’t encourage less caloric consumption in food. America’s obesity problem correlates well with the fact that half the nation consumes sugary beverages and a quarter are taking in over 200 calories per day. In fact, sugary drinks are the top caloric source in teen diets, even more than pizza. But that’s not to say that lower calorie drinks are better. Those also lead to lower quality diets overall. This does not only include soda, but fruit drinks, sports drinks, “ades” or anything with added sweeteners.

Alternatives: Diet soda is not a good option as it also drives cravings for sweets. Flavored water may be a step in the right direction, but those often contain sugar. Using fresh fruits and vegetables in water, or even frozen in ice, is a clean alternative. The main point is to drink things that will help cut down, and eventually cut out, sweet drinks.

Other Bottled Drinks

Even more pure bottled drinks, such as tea or coffee, don’t have the same nutritional benefit as freshly brewed cups. As a general rule, anything which is factory-produced is not going to carry the same health benefits as naturally occurring foods. And substances which can be so quickly consumed will rack up the calorie and chemical count fastest.

Alternatives: Make your own tea and coffee.  The extra mile you go to avoid pre-made drinks, you reap in taste and refreshment. Make extra amounts to take on outings and drink in place of purchasing the processed version.

Pizza is another top source of caloric intake in kids. Each day, twenty percent of kids across the country are eating pizza. The amount of sodium and saturated fat added with the calories is a major contributor to heart disease and obesity. Pizza can be made healthier, but healthy pizza is not trendy or cheap. The primary reason people eat so much pizza is the price. However, the addiction to the high sodium, high fat pizzas drives cravings making people eat more and more. Like most bad foods, the calories are not the worst part. Pizza is full of some notoriously harmful foods, such as bleached flour bread, and processed cheese and meat.

Alternatives: For starters, make your own pizza. It may be harder work, but what you put in you get out. Also, it’s not imperative to eat five or six pieces of pizza. Make small versions of pizza, such as on an English muffin or crackers.

Other Carbohydrates

Bread, pasta and other carbohydrates have a bad image as well, recently for the gluten content. In and of themselves, carbs are not all that bad. The main problem is that people tend to over eat carbs. As with all things, bread and pasta in moderation is fine. If eaten daily and obsessively, as some people do with pizza, then there is no doubt serious health complications including considerable weight gain will result.

Alternatives: Look up some healthier carb replacement options. There are many creative dishes that can compensate for the cravings carbs provide. These Men’s Health and Women’s Health articles give creative examples of ways to substitute various vegetables for potatoes or pasta

Gluten Free

Anything labeled as gluten-free may be a health hazard. Cutting out gluten isn’t necessarily nutritionally beneficial as trends might suggest. Unless someone has a true allergy, which less than 7% of people actually do, removing gluten from the diet can be detrimental because many gluten-free foods substitute sugar, sodium or fat to compensate for taste. Moreover, gluten itself is a vital protein that can help combat arsenic in the bloodstream.

Alternatives: In principle breads, cereals, pasta and beer are not all that good for a diet. And they all contain gluten. However, they aren’t bad specifically because of the gluten. Until you are aware of an allergy, there is no reason to stop eating gluten.

Fried Foods

Potato chips, french fries and pretty much any fried foods need to be avoided. Even eating fried okra or other vegetables doesn’t create a healthier option than eating a fried potato. The basic premise is that heating oil to a high temperature creates a chemical compound that is rather carcinogenic and correlated with cancer.

Highlighted in all of these examples is that “bad” foods are okay once in a while. In fact, some of the healthier ideas in new food trends involve some familiar favorites, with some modern health considerations for an upgrade. The overall problem lies in that commonly snacking on things like potato chips does not lead to better eating habits. The idea is to avoid many common, low quality items routinely because a body needs to be adjusted to like foods that are good for it. Therefore a good mix of foods is crucial.

A step in the right direction could be the content of school lunches. Schools can limit the availability of sugary drinks and improve lunch lines to promote good habits and teachable moments. Ideally, a good education carries over into the home as well. A good health education should include physical exercise and the presence of organic foods. In most cases, organic foods are much healthier than processed foods. Organic foods avoid most of the pesticides used for mass growing and avoid the sugar and salt additives used to preserve the lesser quality foods. This all creates for cleaner foods that remove most of the addictive properties that lead to overeating and craving unhealthy foods.

Yet, even organic eating can get a bad rap. For example, the most common reason people don’t eat organic is the expense. However, green living on a budget tips show that one of the many benefits of healthy menu planning saves money. Being in the routine of taking time and preparing is always the way to execute any plan. Without prepping lunches for school, work or other outings is setting a person up for hungry and desperate situations, which results in eating out more than usual and going for the quick fixes. The cost of eating out will quickly become prohibitively expensive, much more so than making food from all organic, locally grown foods.

In addition to spending the same amount of money, or even less, on quality foods promotes a healthier and more eco-conscious lifestyle. It’s that lifestyle, those daily choices, that will save money and make a person healthier.

One way to deal with the expense is to focus on foods that are the more valuable to purchase organically. Livestrong has a list of foods to buy organic while on a budget. Some of the most critical foods I look at are organic peanut butter, potatoes, fruit, vegetables (particularly corn), dairy and meat.

Organic peanut butter carries the biggest upside of any single food. It has so many vitamins, like potassium, magnesium, Vitamins E and B6 along with unsaturated fats providing the “good cholesterol” to keep the doctor away. What’s better in the natural and organic versions is very little sodium and sugar.

Organic meat and dairy products are better since the animals themselves eat an organic diet with no hormones or antibiotics, not to mention the better over effect on the environment.

Potatoes are among the most common and healthy parts of a diet. They also grow in the ground, leaving them to soak in pesticides and other chemicals, unless they are grown in organic fields. Another factor that is important to consider that when potatoes are peeled or fried, they will lose a majority of their nutrients. In other words, whole roasted or baked organic potatoes are about the best value for long term health.

With fruits and vegetables as well, there are so many more vitamins and antioxidants in the organic versions that it is somewhat wasted of money to buy lesser quality.

The problem with organic farming is that the government doesn’t do much to support it, even where the economic benefits to farmers and communities outweigh the popular commercial farming practices. Currently, the popular practice is more attractive. What needs to happen is the improved image of organic farming.

That image could be changing with the right marketing practices. Chinese food producer Volk Favor is trying to deliver the best of both worlds. There may room for processed junk food-type pleasures within the organic realm.

Just remember to not overdo just because the product looks good, tastes good and feels good. There is a also such thing as too much of a good thing.

Fruit Salad

This fruit salad is tasty and refreshing! Especially great in the summer, but because these fruits are available year round you can enjoy this tasty dish any time.

For the fruit salad

  • 2 small or medium apples
  • 1 large banana
  • 1/4 pound seedless grapes
  • 1 can pineapple chunks, juice reserved, 20 ounces
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut

For the dressing

  • 1/4 cup reserved pineapple juice
  • 2 tablespoons honey, warmed
  • Dash of ground cinnamon

  1. Drain pineapple, reserving the juice. Remove core from apples and chop into bite sized pieces. Slice banana. Mix the apples, banana, grapes, pineapples, and coconut in a medium bowl.
  2. Add the honey to a small bowl and microwave for 10-15 seconds or until warm. Add the pineapple juice and dash of cinnamon and mix well. Pour over the fruit and stir gently to coat. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Recipe notes: The bananas don’t hold up well in the refrigerator for more than just a few hours, so if you plan on leaving it in the refrigerator for a while or plan on having leftovers, I would add the banana to the amount you plan on serving and then add it to the leftovers when you serve it.

Also, if I were serving this to small children I would cut the grapes in half because they are more likely to choke on a round object such as grapes.
